Spring Fashion Trends

New York Fashion Week is always a great way to check out the new and upcoming trends. Neon is one of the biggest color trends seen on the runway this year. I don’t know about you, but I tend not to be a big “trend” person. I like to stick with the basics and integrate just a few things that seem to be popular. Besides, how old is too old to still wear what the “new” trend is? Check out these examples of the neon trend.

I love the look of bold color on African American skin.

My Tribute to Whitney Houston

It’s Thursday, and soooooo unusual for me to not have posted this week by now.  I’ve come to the conclusion that I have avoided writing because I am still in shock and somewhat in denial of the passing of Whitney Houston. Saturday evening I was sitting around with my sisters watching TV, and CNN pops on the screen and announces “Whitney Houston is Dead at 48.” My mouth dropped open, I fell silent, and I could not get my thoughts together. We sat there and watched the rest of the news, and when I went home that night it still didn’t feel real to me. Whitney Houston is dead????? How can this be????

My blog serves as a platform for me to express myself and communicate my brand’s message which is to empower women. Today it will serve as a way for me to pay my final respects to a singer I really admired. Whitney is special to me because when I was younger I wanted to be a singer. My family has always been religious, so we didn’t listen to secular music often. I remember Whitney’s voice being so pure and classic that when her songs came on the radio, the fact that she was secular artist almost didn’t matter. She had such a beautiful tone, and I even learned one of her songs for a recital when I was kid. Continue reading

The Highs and Lows of The Grammys

Last night was a great TV night, my family was totally annoyed with me because I kept flipping between The Stellar Awards and The Grammy Awards. I really wanted to see the Whitney Houston tribute and I love gospel music so it was a trip trying to flip back and forth just to make sure I didn’t miss anything. The Grammy’s were quite entertaining, and filled with many highs and lows here are my favorite highlights.

I love Adele! My kids are big fans of her too, I was so excited she won 6 Grammys! I thought she looked and sounded beautiful, represent for the full figure women Adele. So great to see a celebrity who looks more like your average woman. Continue reading

How To Select The Right Foundation Shade

Recently I was browsing through pictures of my facebook friends and I noticed a beautiful face with the wrong color foundation.  A gorgeous smile with a ashy gray mask of makeup and a bold line of demarcation.  I wanted to scream WHY!!!!! I thought to myself, choosing the right shade can be a little tricky. Never to fear I am here to help.

Beyonce Post Baby Photos

It was Beyonce’s first time out after delivering baby girl Blue Ivy Carter. As a mom of three I say she looks pretty darn good. This dress fits her curves well, and she looks happy and healthy. As always, I look very closely at details and I noticed how she stood in this photo. If you are ever trying to conceal weight, its a great trick to pose with one leg behind the other, it instantly makes you look slimmer. Check out the photos, what do you think?

Viola Davis Short Cropped Natural Hair

The LA Times just released new photos of Viola Davis in a beautiful fashion spread showing her natural hair. All I can say is wow, what a transformation! I looked at the photos and instantly thought about how she normally wears her hair in a straight european look. I guess this works if you are an actress and you are required to change your hair for different roles, but I really wondered why isn’t this beautiful short cropped afro look more acceptable and more seen in Hollywood? Check out the full interview here and share your thoughts in the comments.

Black Beauty at The SAG Awards

It was great to watch The SAG Awards last night and see so many beautiful black faces. Black women are too often misrepresented in the media and for this reason, anything on TV that shows our community in a positive light gets a front row seat from me. I didn’t actually watch The SAG Awards in its entirety because of the Real Housewives of ATL and Oprah’s Next Chapter being on at the same time, but I grabbed a couple of photos from last night’s ceremony and these were my faves in makeup, fashion and hair. What were some of your faves?

Viola Davis won an award for her role in "The Help" she looked stunning!

Industry Standard Fashion Show

This past Sunday I was super excited to attend The Industry Fashion Show hosted by The Monroe Sisters and Beautiful Brown Baby Doll. It was great to see so many gorgeous naturals out supporting the natural hair community.

Beautiful Brown Baby Doll

The first scene in the fashion show was my favorite because it spoke to how their is an industry standard of beauty. The Monroe Sisters did a great job of defying these standards by having models of all different sizes, complexions and even hair types. Sometimes I think the natural hair community can start to feel like an elitist group. For this reason I especially enjoyed the diversity of this event. The room was packed with people of all races, ages and genders. You ladies did an awesome job! There are so many great events happening in the Chicago Natural Hair community. If you haven’t already, go and get your tickets for the The Black HERstory Event happening Feb 18, 2012. Join CharyJay of YouTube fame, The Monroe Sisters and Briana of The Mane Source. We are going to have a great time celebrating women and sharing natural hair tips. Click here to learn more. Enjoy the photos!
